On March 23, my buddy, Mike, told me there would be a recruiting meeting for Microsoft in the Clyde building on campus as BYU that afternoon at 5:00 p.m. The flyer he showed me said that they would be giving away free software and a digital camera to those who brought their resumes. So I quickly checked over my semi-out-of-date resume and modified a few things to make it current. I didn’t bother to print it out on nice paper like I usually would because I figured I was just going to stick it in the raffle box. Honestly, I wasn’t really planning on trying for an internship, but I thought it would be educational to go to the meeting and, hey, I might get some free stuff too.
The meeting was in a large auditorium-style classroom with stadium seating. There were about 80 students there. I recognized a lot of them from the Computer Science department, but there were also quite a students from other departments like Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, Math, and the Business School. The recruiter was Jeremy. He gave a Powerpoint presentation about how cool Microsoft is and listed the many perks available to Microsoft interns and full-time employees. Of course, the presentation had a “propaganda” feel to it, especially when Jeremy quite humorously made the following suggestion: “If you want to know more about this project, just ‘MSN search’ it.”
Anyway, I put my resume in the raffle box, but I didn’t win anything. However, that’s not the end of the story…
